The Interfaith Winter Shelter is a floating evening shelter for those who are without place to stay during the winter months, with a different church hosting it each night of the week. This effort has been essentially to decreasing frostbite and deaths from exposure in the Bloomington community. In the past, our students have participated by setting up, serving food, checking in guests, as well as a host of other tasks. Our participation with the Interfaith Winter Shelter is important because it is where the rubber meets the road in terms of the Christian life. Christ taught us that whatever we do for those in need, we are doing for him. By assisting with the Winter Shelter, we are enabling our students to express their love for God in service to their neighbor.

This semester, we will be working in coordination with the LGBTQ Center to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance in October. This is particular important given the recent rise in violence and hatred directed at the transgender community, often at the hands of those who call themselves Christian. Participating in this event will show that there are Christians on campus who seek to model Christ by loving our neighbors as ourselves.

The Latin American Policy Association (LAPA) is a student-run organization with the purpose of gathering members of the academic community interested in policy, governance, public administration, politics and other public affairs in Latin America, as well as promoting the study and academic debate around these topics. In a multicultural community as the one we live here in Bloomington, we truly believe that all the efforts to understand and share values from several cultures and current issues from around the world is very enriching. This connection between our local reality and whatever happens around the world makes us more embracing, tolerant and open to dialogue with all sorts of people.
